独自エラー画面を作成してみました。
サイトの作成の解説でも、作成方法を見かける事がありますが、実際に独自のエラー画面を作成している人は少ないようです。
エラー画面はめったに出ないと思っている人が多いですが、私のサイトでは「画面が見つからないエラー（Page not Found）」は日常的に出ます。(笑）
作成方法は知ってしまえば簡単ですが、知らないと画像は入れられなかったり、別画面にジャンプさせたりと、おかしな事をやっているようです。
私も日本のサイトの解説では不明な点が多かったので、外国の解説サイトを見て理解（何となくですが）できました。

一番難しいのが、画面に掲載する絵です。
私は絵心がないので、普段集めている絵から選んでおりますが、著作権の問題が絡みますから、個人の利用でも自由には扱えないでしょう。
もし、著作権侵害のクレームがきたら、絵を差し替える必要があります。（あるいは、使用する場合に画像提供者のサイトへリンクを張る必要があったりします）

初心者のために、念のために補足しますが、/var/www/error と言うフォルダを新規作成（存在しない場合）して、そこに自分で作成した error401.html、error403.html、error404.html をアップロードします。
画像ファイルは、そこに一緒に入れるか、私のように更に下層に img フォルダを作成して入れておきます。
画像リンクは、構成によって異なりますが、私のような場合には /error/img/＊＊＊.jpg のような感じになります。
どうしても画像をリンクできない場合は、絶対アドレス（http://yukke-no-kobeya.ddo.jp/img/＊＊＊.jpg）にして、公開しているイメージファイルの場所に同居させておけば良いでしょう。

もし、バーチャルホストの構成にしていて、ホスト毎にエラー画面も変えたい場合には、バーチャルホストの設定内に記入します。
私は、最初はその方法で行っておりました。
その場合の書式は、こんな具合です。

それから、ファイルの文字数云々（630文字以上が必要であるとか）は無いようです。
コメントアウトしているエラーは、各ブラウザ固有のエラー表示になる筈です。
もし、使用する場合は、ファイルの置き場所を変更しましたので、ファイルも移動させる必要があります。
